I am Monique Baker McCormick, asking for your support and your vote on Tuesday August 7, 2018 for Wayne County Commissioner District 6. As a Veteran of the U.S Army, I have been a fighter for Northwest Detroit most of my adult life. Please read my biography below.

My focus on the Commission will be:                                                                                              

  1. Jobs not Jails– more money spent on vocational training and education than jails.
  2. Senior property tax reduction or caps
  3. Small business growth and development in neighborhoods– Shop your Block initiatives

Monique is a lifelong resident and business owner in District 6 and for over 10 years, she has supported District 6 and fought for working families, for students, seniors and for economic development in Wayne County. In fact, Monique has thousands of supporters in District 6. She was the second highest vote getter in the August Primary Elections for Wayne County Commissioner in 2016, 2014, 2012, 2010 and 2008.

Monique is a veteran of the U.S. Army, Peace Peddler and an honorary member of the Tuskegee Airmen. A Democrat, she is a graduate of District 6 Henry Ford High School and earned her Bachelor Degree in Business Administration from Davenport University and Master’s Degree in Business from Walsh College of Business and Accountancy in 1996.

In 2001, Monique, a State of Michigan licensed Real Estate Broker purchased McCormick’s Place and relocated her full service real estate company from Ferndale to District 6. McCormick’s Place has been a hub for community events, small business start-ups, a church, barber shop, printing company, excavating company and more. Additionally, Monique is a State of Michigan licensed Financial Services Specialist with AAA of Michigan.

In 2015, Monique was nominated by Congresswoman Brenda Lawrence to represent the 14th Congressional District in the prestigious Congressional Black Caucus Leadership Institute in Washington, D.C. In addition, Monique was elected 13th and 14th Congressional District Vice-Chair and has been an elected Precinct Delegate in the 13th Congressional District for over 15 years.

Over the years the democrat has served on the following Board of Directors, past and present, Matrix Human Services, Detroit Repertory Theatre Board of Trustees, Walsh College Alumni Board, Pathways Development Board and the Community Coalition. Monique is a member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Inc., Women Informal Network, Peace Peddlers, Coleman A. Young American Legion Post 202, Citadel of Praise and honorary member of the Tuskegee Airmen.

Monique received many awards and recognition: The Spirit of Detroit Award 2008 and 2010, WWJ Rising Star, Wayne County Commission Distinguished Service Award 2014, Woman of the Year Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Inc., and Most Influential Woman in Metro Detroit- WIN.

Monique and her two daughters attended J.R. King Elementary School and Ludington Middle School in District 6 where Monique was elected President of the Parent Organizations at both schools. Monique successfully organized parents and students to protest against DPS Emergency Manager and the closing of good schools in Northwest Detroit. Most recently in 2016, Monique joined American Federation of Teachers in a class action lawsuit for better conditions in DPS schools.

Additionally, Monique’s daughters both graduated from Cass Technical High School where Monique served five terms as Chair of Cass Title One Parent Organization. Monique is engaged to be married next year.
